Grotte de la Madeleine

The Grotte is situated in a place of outstanding natural beauty which includes stunning views of the Gorges, walks,and an abundance of wildlife indiginous to the region. The grotte itself was opened on 10th August 1969 and is one of the most outstanding in France.

The Grotte was discovered in 1887 by Germain Rigaud, a shepherd from Saint-Remèze. When he first discovered the cave he had only a candle with which to regard the stunning discovery. Formed by subterranean water and overlooking one of the most beautiful views in the Ardèche Gorges “The belvedère de la Madeleine”.


The Grotte de la Madeleine is situated 4.3 mi from Saint-Remèze in the centre of the famous scenic route overlooking The Gorges between Vallon Pont d’Arc and Saint-Martin d’Ardèche.
